Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu has praised Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his swift actions regarding former Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya. However, Seruiratu expressed deep concerns about potential criminality and the possibility of a cover-up involving both Ms. Tabuya and FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali.
In a recent statement, Seruiratu raised questions over the accuracy of Ms. Tabuya’s claim regarding her marital status. He highlighted that Ms. Tabuya had declared her divorce from Robert Semaan in 2016, which exempted her from reporting his assets. However, new claims suggest that they may still be married, bringing her honesty, transparency, and integrity into serious question.
The situation has become further complicated by Ms. Tabuya’s assertion that an explicit video incident was a private matter with her husband, contradicting her previous divorce claims. This inconsistency, according to Seruiratu, undermines her credibility and that of her leadership while eroding public trust.
Moreover, Seruiratu noted that Ms. Tabuya’s role as co-chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji is now in jeopardy due to these revelations. He emphasized that the taskforce has strict conduct guidelines, and Ms. Tabuya’s position is called into question by her alleged actions.
Seruiratu also pointed out the need to examine Commissioner Malimali’s decision to close the investigation based on potentially misleading information. He urged that these matters be investigated to determine if Ms. Tabuya influenced the Commissioner.
Seruiratu called for a commitment to high standards of integrity and accountability from public officials and urged for a transparent investigation to restore public trust in leadership. He plans to bring these issues to Parliament, advocating for the accountability that the Fijian people deserve.
Both Ms. Tabuya and Ms. Malimali have not responded to inquiries regarding Seruiratu’s concerns.
This article sheds light on the importance of accountability within public office and emphasizes the need for transparent processes to maintain the trust of the electorate. As Fijians observe these unfolding events, there is hope that a thorough investigation will lead to greater integrity within governance, reinforcing the principles of honesty and transparency that are vital for the nation’s leadership.
