The existing deficiencies in mandated agencies are hindering authorities from effectively tackling issues related to drug trafficking and human trafficking. Vani Catanasiga, the executive director of the Fiji Council of Social Services, emphasized that addressing the problem requires a direct approach.
Catanasiga pointed out that when integrity is lacking, it must be confronted. She underscored the need for law enforcement agencies to operate with integrity. The recent Trafficking in Persons Report from the United States highlights the capacity gaps observed within mandated agencies, which aligns with community observations.
She stressed the importance of eradicating corruption in order to effectively deal with these challenges. Furthermore, Catanasiga insisted that communities need to be educated, which is why support from the Asia Foundation is crucial in empowering communities to recognize and report trafficking without fear of stigma.
She noted that non-governmental organizations cannot tackle these issues alone.
