The commission of inquiry investigating the death of boxer Ubayd Haider will present an update today, as confirmed by chairman Edwin Wainiqolo. Wainiqolo stated that the promoter of South Pacific Boxing Promotion, Freddy Chand, has yet to be interviewed in connection with the case.

The inquiry has already conducted interviews with local individuals linked to the bout, including the three referees who officiated the fight sanctioned by the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and members of Haider’s family. Wainiqolo noted that only the promoter and the financier remain to be interviewed before the formal report can be released.

The date for the completion of the investigation remains uncertain, but Wainiqolo mentioned that he would provide a definitive timeline during the press conference scheduled for today at 10 AM at the Ministry of Youth and Sports office in Nadi.

Ubayd Haider suffered a ninth-round technical knockout in his title fight against Sydney’s Runqi Zhou on October 26 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. Following the match, he collapsed and was hospitalized, where he underwent surgery for head injuries. Unfortunately, Haider did not recover and passed away on November 10. His funeral took place on November 12 at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu. His tragic death marks him as the fourth Fijian boxer to die from injuries sustained in the ring.

This inquiry highlights the importance of safety measures in professional boxing, aiming to prevent such tragedies in the future. The ongoing investigations demonstrate a commitment to accountability and thoroughness, ensuring that lessons are learned to enhance the safety of athletes.

Summary: The commission investigating the death of boxer Ubayd Haider is set to provide an update today, confirming that interviews with key individuals are ongoing. Haider, who suffered fatal injuries during a match, is the fourth Fijian boxer to face such an unfortunate fate, underlining the need for improved safety within the sport.
