Inquiry Unveiled: Fiji Prime Minister Targets Corruption Commissioner Appointment

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his readiness to launch an inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

In a recent interview, Rabuka stated he is in the process of reviewing relevant laws and regulations to determine the appropriate steps for establishing a Board of Inquiry. He aims to investigate particular concerns surrounding Malimali’s appointment to the position.

“Once I have completed this review and examined the legal framework for its establishment, I will initiate the inquiry to investigate all parties involved in what has become a challenging situation, from the appointment to the resignations of the two FICAC office holders,” Rabuka noted.

The Prime Minister also mentioned he is not aware of the details contained in an out-brief submitted by Francis Pulewai, who has resigned from his role as Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC.

He indicated that the inquiry would also address allegations of interference in ongoing investigations. Rabuka remarked on delays in receiving Malimali’s resignation from her position as Chair of the Electoral Commission, hinting that it was sent to him later than expected.

In related news, Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed that FICAC has received an official report concerning alleged abuse of office linked to Pulewai.
