Two members of the Commission of Inquiry investigating the death of featherweight boxer Ubayed Haider (previously Nathan Singh) have resigned. The members stepping down are former Republic of Fiji Military Forces Land Force Commander Pita Driti and Boxing Commission of Fiji Chairman Adi Narayan. This resignation was confirmed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru.
Narayan clarified that he excused himself from the three-member investigating team to ensure transparency and avoid any potential conflicts of interest, especially since the Boxing Commission he chairs is also implicated in the inquiry. Driti’s withdrawal was primarily based on his concerns over a conflict of interest as well.
Saukuru mentioned that they are in the process of finalizing a replacement for the third member of the investigation team, which currently consists of Philip Eneriko, director for Youth and Sports, and Edwin Wainiqolo from Lautoka, a lawyer by profession who will lead the investigation. Narayan also announced that Wainiqolo would handle further inquiries regarding the investigation’s progress.
Haider tragically collapsed during his IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title fight on October 26, suffered severe head injuries requiring emergency surgery at Lautoka Hospital, and ultimately passed away on November 10. His funeral took place shortly after at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu.
In a more positive light, Narayan noted that boxing promotions are set to continue, with several promoters having renewed their licenses for next year. Bluewater Boxing Promotions will host multiple events, and promoter Samir Khan is planning to unveil his next promotion in the coming weeks.
This situation underlines a commitment to ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation while also looking forward to the revival of boxing in the region, showcasing resilience in the sport despite recent tragedies.
