Inquiry Looms Over FICAC Leadership: What’s Next for Fiji?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his readiness to conduct an inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

In a recent interview, Rabuka indicated that he is currently examining the relevant regulations and legislation to establish the appropriate process for initiating a Board of Inquiry. The aim is to investigate particular concerns surrounding Malimali’s appointment to her current position.

Rabuka remarked, “Once I have completed this review and assessed the legal framework to set up the inquiry, I will proceed to establish one. This inquiry will seek to uncover all individuals involved in what has emerged as a challenging situation, from the appointment to the resignations of two FICAC office holders.”

Additionally, Rabuka noted that he is not familiar with the details of the report filed by Francis Pulewai, who recently resigned as Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC. He indicated that the inquiry would also cover allegations of interference in ongoing investigations.

The Prime Minister mentioned there was a delay in receiving Malimali’s resignation as Chair of the Electoral Commission, implying that it was sent to him later than expected.

In related news, Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed that FICAC has received an official report concerning alleged abuse of office involving Pulewai.
