Inquiry Looms Over FICAC Commissioner Amid Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that he will soon submit a letter to the President for approval regarding the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Rabuka had previously indicated that determining the scope and specific mandate of the inquiry is within his authority. Malimali’s recent appointment on September 4 has sparked controversy due to her ongoing investigation by the very agency she is now leading.

“We are just waiting for the President to respond, and I will ensure he signs the approval,” Rabuka stated. “I have recommended my letter for him to review upon his return.”

The agenda for the inquiry will also address the controversies surrounding FICAC, which include the appointment of Barbara Malimali, allegations of ministerial interference, and accusations of scapegoating regarding ministerial charges.
