Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced plans to submit a letter to the President for approval regarding a Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Mr. Rabuka noted that determining the scope and specific mandate of the inquiry is within his authority. Malimali’s appointment as FICAC Commissioner, which took place on September 4, has sparked controversy, particularly since she is currently under investigation by the organization she oversees.

“We are just waiting for the President to respond so I can secure his approval,” Mr. Rabuka stated. “I have already recommended my letter to him, and it will be presented when he returns.”

The upcoming inquiry will address various issues, including the appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner, allegations of ministerial interference, and concerns about the scapegoating of ministerial charges.
