Inquiry Launched Amid Controversy Over FICAC Commissioner Appointment

A board of inquiry is set to be established in response to growing distrust regarding the appointment of Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the inquiry aims to uncover the issues surrounding Ms. Malimali’s resignation from the Electoral Commission and her subsequent appointment as commissioner.

He emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to ensure the integrity of the appointment process. Labeling the situation as a “difficult issue,” Rabuka stated that the inquiry would identify those responsible for the handling of Ms. Malimali’s resignation and appointment.

“Those involved will have to come forward and provide their explanations,” he said, noting that if any parties are found culpable, follow-up actions must be taken. Rabuka pointed out that there had been delays in notifying his office about Ms. Malimali’s resignation and indicated that this communication lapse needs to be addressed.

The Prime Minister mentioned that he is currently reviewing inquiry regulations and legislation to properly establish the board. Furthermore, he seeks clarity on the timeline of Ms. Malimali’s resignation and the resignation of former FICAC deputy commissioner Francis Pulewai on September 5. Rabuka asserted that details about the two officials’ appointments, resignations, and related investigations must be thoroughly examined and clarified to restore confidence in the system.
