Inquiry Into Corruption Appointment Seeks Essential Extension

The Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is requesting an extension to continue its hearings until the end of February. The inquiry, which began recently, is currently faced with the challenge of reviewing a substantial amount of evidence and testimony from a total of 35 witnesses.

Supreme Court Judge Justice David Ashton-Lewis, who is overseeing the COI, stated that only seven witnesses have provided their testimonies so far, leaving 28 individuals still to be heard. This slow progress is primarily due to the in-depth nature of questioning required to gather comprehensive and thorough accounts surrounding Malimali’s appointment last September. Justice Ashton-Lewis emphasized that the quality of the responses is vital, stating, “Simple responses like ‘yes’ or ‘no’ are insufficient. We are looking for detailed explanations.”

The inquiry’s objective is to determine whether Malimali’s appointment followed legal protocols and to investigate any potential influences from vested interests, particularly in relation to ongoing FICAC cases involving high-profile individuals. Counsel Assistant Janet Mason noted that the inquiry is as much about the integrity of institutions as it is about individuals, showcasing the importance of maintaining public trust in governmental processes.

Both Justice Ashton-Lewis and Mason highlighted the cooperative nature of the witnesses thus far, with factual and unbiased testimonies aiding the investigation. As the COI prepares to submit its report by the end of January, it is crucial that all voices are heard thoroughly, and the request for an extension underscores a commitment to due diligence in the inquiry.

This ongoing investigation signifies a crucial step towards enhancing the transparency and accountability of governmental institutions in Fiji. The extended timeframe may lead to a more profound understanding of the complexities surrounding Malimali’s appointment while reinforcing the commitment to integrity within the public sector. Such efforts can ultimately contribute to improved governance standards and public trust in the future.
