Inquiry in the Air: PM Backs FICAC Head Amid Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed no objections to Barbara Malimali remaining as the head of FICAC while the Government seeks to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations made by Francis Puleiwai, the former Deputy Commissioner.

In a media statement, Rabuka indicated that Malimali is free to continue her responsibilities, unless she believes her involvement would hinder the investigation, in which case she could choose to step back. He emphasized her competence, stating, “She (Malimali) is a senior lawyer, she should know what is in the best interest of everyone.”

The Prime Minister noted that an independent commission would be more effective in addressing the issues presented by Puleiwai, especially those pertaining to alleged ministerial interference in FICAC inquiries. He stated that if the inquiry discovers any improper interference, the appropriate due process as prescribed by the Commission of Inquiry would be followed.

Rabuka also addressed the allegations regarding threats made against Puleiwai, condemning any such behavior if it occurred. However, he clarified that he had not received any reports of threats, nor had these been communicated to him or documented by the Fiji Police.
