Inquiry Demanded: Fiji’s Controversial FICAC Appointment Under Fire

Pressure is mounting on the Government, particularly Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, to swiftly establish an independent Board of Inquiry regarding the contentious appointment of Barbara Malimali as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Political analysts argue that, despite the potential costs and time required, such an inquiry is essential. Opposition MP Premila Kumar, the only female member of the opposition, emphasized the need for accountability, stating that the people of Fiji are seeking answers.

Kumar pointed out that this is not the first instance where the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has made questionable appointments. She referenced last year’s appointment of John Rabuku as acting Director of Public Prosecutions, which the Supreme Court later deemed ineligible.

“Why was Malimali’s appointment fast-tracked given that she is known to be under investigation?” Kumar questioned. She stressed that common sense would suggest that someone under scrutiny should not be placed in such a significant position.

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry expressed concern over the Coalition Government’s lackadaisical approach to the issue, despite Prime Minister Rabuka’s commitment to initiate a Board of Inquiry.

G9 crossbencher Mosese Bulitavu supported the decision to pursue this inquiry, noting that the discussion surrounding FICAC is unfolding under Rabuka’s leadership. He pointed out that several ministers, including the Attorney-General, have defended Malimali’s appointment, adding that while FICAC operates independently, the Prime Minister often faces public scrutiny due to his position.

According to Bulitavu, an inquiry would effectively resolve the ongoing situation. Malimali declined to comment when contacted, stating she could not answer any questions at the moment. The Attorney-General Graham Leung and the JSC were also approached for comments but did not respond.
