Inquiry Call: A New Era for Governance in Fiji?

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed his support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s plans to set up an independent and impartial Commission of Inquiry. This Commission will investigate the troubling allegations made by former deputy commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in the agency.

Seruiratu emphasized that these allegations are serious and must be properly addressed. He is in agreement with the Prime Minister’s call for an investigation and believes that establishing an impartial Commission of Inquiry is crucial for ensuring fairness, transparency, and good governance. He suggested that this Commission should be formed after the upcoming parliamentary sitting.

The proposed Commission could consist of judicial officials, lawmakers, and esteemed legal experts from the private sector, as long as they are not under any ongoing investigation and maintain impartiality, avoiding any conflicts of interest with the matters at hand.

Seruiratu pointed out that the allegations pose a significant threat to good governance and the democratic ideals of the nation. He expressed hope that Francis Puleiwai would be available to clarify the allegations and that those accused would have the opportunity to defend themselves.

He stressed the importance of addressing these issues, as the nation stands at a critical juncture. He called on representatives of the Fijian people to diligently pursue the truth behind these allegations and work towards restoring public trust.
