Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his agreement with Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry regarding the need for Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali to step aside during an inquiry into her appointment.
“I agree,” Mr. Rabuka stated. He emphasized that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) should address the ‘Out Report’ that Malimali was expected to prepare before her removal from the role of acting commissioner.
The Prime Minister mentioned that a board of inquiry would be established soon to resolve the concerns surrounding Ms. Malimali’s resignation from the Electoral Commission and her subsequent appointment as commissioner. He believes that a thorough investigation is necessary to uphold the integrity of the appointment process.
Mr. Chaudhry welcomed Mr. Rabuka’s decision to set up a board of inquiry, stating that it reflects the support of the public in efforts to “flush out the rot” within FICAC, which has been a source of national concern. He also asserted that Ms. Malimali should temporarily step down to allow for an unobstructed inquiry, highlighting the importance of an independent investigation consisting of members without ties to any involved parties.
