The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) and The Fertile Factory & Company Limited have begun talks on a potential partnership aimed at promoting sustainability in both recycling and agriculture.
This initiative aims to address plastic waste management and improve organic farming techniques. The Fertile Factory recently launched BulaBioBrew Soil, a natural liquid fertiliser designed to enhance soil biology and boost plant health. Packaged in PET bottles, BulaBioBrew Soil provides a chemical-free option to increase soil diversity.
PRF is looking at ways to capture these PET bottles after the fertiliser is used through its recycling programs. The discussions include the implementation of a deposit system to incentivize the collection, reuse, and recycling of these bottles to prevent environmental pollution and landfill accumulation.
Amitesh Deo, founder of PRF, expressed enthusiasm about the potential collaboration with The Fertile Factory, stating that it could become a pioneering project for Fiji. He noted, “If this collaboration progresses, it will support our efforts to reduce plastic waste by ensuring that PET bottles used for packaging BulaBioBrew Soil are captured through our recycling programs. This initiative will contribute to a cleaner environment while supporting sustainable agricultural practices.”
Another area under consideration is the possibility of PRF’s sustainability initiative, Malhana Cloud Kitchen Restaurant, using BulaBioBrew Soil on its farms, which operates under a farm-to-table model. The goal is to show the value of organic fertiliser and underscore the importance of recycling in agriculture.
Sanjeev Chand, Chief Executive of The Fertile Factory, shared optimism regarding the discussions. “We are pleased to begin exploring collaboration with Pacific Recycling Foundation. BulaBioBrew Soil has the potential to revolutionise how farmers care for their soil, and by collaborating with PRF, we aim to ensure that the PET bottles used for packaging do not harm the environment. While these are early discussions, we see great promise in developing a system that promotes recycling and supports sustainable farming practices,” Chand said.
Although still in the early stages, these discussions between PRF and The Fertile Factory could lead to innovative solutions that combine organic farming with responsible plastic waste management.
