Innovations in Climate-Smart Agriculture to Take Center Stage at 2024 National Agriculture Show

The Ministry of Agriculture announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the focal point of the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18. The event, themed “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” was highlighted by Minister Vatimi Rayalu, who noted the tangible impacts of climate change on Fiji’s agriculture, including saltwater intrusion affecting both coastal and river areas.

The four-day event aims to gather farmers, agricultural specialists, industry leaders, and the general public to address these pressing issues. Participants will have access to hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and discussions led by experts, focusing on the latest developments in climate-smart agricultural practices.

Minister Rayalu emphasized the significance of adopting these practices, advocating for the use of traditional crop varieties that have proven their resilience over time. He expressed a preference for propagating these established varieties over developing numerous hybrid options.

In addition to crops, the National Agriculture Show will introduce new livestock breeds and showcase advancements in animal health and production methods. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations of biogas production and other innovative livestock practices. The event also provides a platform for farmers to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.

A dedicated “Farmers’ Village” will feature local farmers exhibiting their produce and value-added products, along with interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages. Minister Rayalu encouraged farmers, schoolchildren, and the public to participate in the event, aiming to celebrate agricultural innovations and work towards a more sustainable and productive future for the industry.
