Inmates Stage Hunger Strike Over Kitchen Dispute in Fiji

The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed that two inmates at one of its facilities have started a hunger strike, which commenced on Friday. These inmates were previously assigned to the facility’s kitchen.

Their hunger strike was triggered by a disagreement concerning the management of food supplies, resulting in an internal investigation that led to their temporary suspension from kitchen duties. The inmates are voicing their discontent over this decision and are demanding to be reinstated to their former positions.

Despite several counseling sessions conducted by senior officers, healthcare professionals, and other support staff, the inmates remain firm in their hunger strike. In response, the FCS is working to involve spiritual leaders from their respective faiths to offer additional support and guidance.

The Corrections Service has emphasized that the health and welfare of these inmates are of utmost importance. Medical staff are closely monitoring the individuals, and all necessary precautions are being implemented to ensure their health during this time.

Both the Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been notified about the ongoing situation regarding the hunger strike. The FCS remains committed to maintaining the safety and security of all inmates while addressing their grievances through recognized internal processes.
