Inmates Protest with Hunger Strike: What’s Behind the Demand?

The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed that two inmates at one of its facilities have begun a hunger strike, which started on Friday.

According to the FCS, the inmates had previously worked in the facility’s kitchen. Following a dispute regarding the handling of food supplies, an internal investigation was initiated, leading to their temporary removal from kitchen duties. The inmates are now expressing their dissatisfaction with this decision and are demanding to be reinstated to their former positions.

Despite multiple counseling sessions conducted by senior officers, healthcare professionals, and support staff, the inmates have chosen to continue their hunger strike. The FCS is taking steps to involve spiritual leaders from their respective faiths to provide additional support and guidance.

The Fiji Corrections Service has emphasized that the health and well-being of these inmates is their highest priority. The individuals are under close observation by medical staff, and all necessary measures are being implemented to ensure their safety during this time.

The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation surrounding the hunger strike. The FCS remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all inmates while addressing their grievances through proper internal mechanisms.
