The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) is investigating a case involving two inmates who recently engaged in a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This investigation was prompted by a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) that addressed the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.
The hunger strike stemmed from disagreements over food supply management, which led to the two inmates being removed from their positions in the facility’s kitchen for an internal investigation. In a show of discontent, they began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous roles.
FCS confirmed on Monday evening that the hunger strike concluded, and their medical team assessed the health of the inmates involved. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is currently looking into the situation. The FHRADC also reported that the inmates are receiving necessary medical support and will continue to monitor the ongoing situation.
