Inmates Launch Hunger Strike Over Kitchen Duty Dispute

Two inmates at a facility operated by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) have begun a hunger strike, which started on Friday, September 20, 2024.

The FCS confirmed in a statement that the inmates, who were previously employed in the facility’s kitchen, initiated the strike following their temporary removal from kitchen duties after a dispute over food supply handling led to an internal investigation.

The inmates are demanding to be reinstated to their previous positions. Despite several counseling sessions held by senior officers, healthcare professionals, and support staff, the inmates have chosen to continue their hunger strike.

Efforts are being made to involve spiritual leaders from their respective faiths to offer additional support and guidance. The Fiji Corrections Service has emphasized that the health and well-being of the inmates is a top priority.

Medical staff are closely monitoring the inmates, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure their condition is protected during this time.

The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation regarding this hunger strike.

The FCS reiterated its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all inmates while addressing their grievances through appropriate internal processes. They are actively working to resolve the issue and will provide further updates as needed.
