Inmates Launch Hunger Strike Over Kitchen Controversy

The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed that two inmates at one of its facilities have started a hunger strike, which commenced on Friday. The inmates, who had previously worked in the facility’s kitchen, are protesting their temporary removal from kitchen duties following a dispute regarding food supply management, which prompted an internal investigation.

Despite multiple counseling sessions conducted by senior correctional officers and healthcare professionals, the inmates have continued their hunger strike in response to their dissatisfaction with the decision. The Fiji Corrections Service is taking steps to involve spiritual leaders from their respective religious organizations to provide further support and guidance.

The safety and well-being of the inmates is a top priority for the Fiji Corrections Service, which has assured the public that medical staff is closely monitoring their health. The Ministry of Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation.

The Fiji Corrections Service remains committed to ensuring the security of all inmates while addressing grievances through the appropriate internal channels.
