Inmates Launch Hunger Strike Over Job Dispute in Fiji

The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed that two inmates at one of its facilities have begun a hunger strike, which commenced on Friday. The inmates had previously worked in the facility’s kitchen but were removed from their roles following a dispute over food supply management, prompting an internal investigation.

The inmates have voiced their displeasure regarding their removal and are demanding to be reinstated to their kitchen positions. Despite multiple counseling sessions conducted by senior officers, healthcare professionals, and support staff, the inmates have persisted with their hunger strike.

To provide further support, efforts are being made to involve spiritual leaders from their respective faiths. The Fiji Corrections Service emphasized that the health and well-being of the inmates are of utmost importance and that medical staff are closely monitoring their condition, taking necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the ongoing situation regarding the hunger strike. The FCS remains dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of all inmates while appropriately addressing their grievances through internal processes.
