The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has initiated an investigation regarding two inmates who organized a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction Facility. This investigation follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) released on Saturday, which outlined the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.
The inmates staged their hunger strike due to a disagreement related to food supply management. Both individuals worked in the facility’s kitchen and were temporarily reassigned to facilitate an internal inquiry. In response to their dissatisfaction, they began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous positions.
FCS announced that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, at which point their medical team conducted health assessments for the inmates. Pravesh Sharma, the Commissioner of FHRADC, confirmed that a dedicated team is currently investigating the situation. The Commission stated that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and that monitoring of the situation will continue.
