Inmates’ Hunger Strike Triggers Human Rights Investigation in Fiji

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating the hunger strike of two inmates at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This confirmation came after the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) issued a statement on Saturday explaining the circumstances behind the protest.

The inmates began their hunger strike in response to disagreements regarding food supply management. Both individuals had been working in the facility’s kitchen before they were temporarily reassigned to allow for an internal investigation into the matter.

In protest of their removal, the inmates initiated their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be restored to their previous positions. FCS released another statement confirming that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, and their medical team is currently evaluating the health of the inmates involved.

FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma mentioned that a dedicated team from the Commission is looking into the situation. The FHRADC also stated that the inmates are receiving medical care and that they will continue to observe the unfolding events.
