The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced an investigation into the case of two inmates who engaged in a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. The announcement followed a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS), which explained the reasons behind the protest.
The two inmates protested due to a disagreement regarding the management of food supplies and were assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen. They were temporarily removed from their kitchen duties to facilitate an internal investigation into the matter. In response to their dissatisfaction, the inmates commenced a hunger strike last Friday, calling for their reinstatement to their previous positions.
FCS issued another statement confirming that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with medical personnel evaluating the health of the participants. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is currently investigating the situation. The FHRADC also mentioned that the inmates were receiving medical assistance and that they would continue to observe the developments in this case.
