The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating the case of two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This investigation comes after the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) issued a statement clarifying the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.
The two inmates, who were working in the facility’s kitchen, initiated their hunger strike in response to a dispute regarding the management of food supplies. They were temporarily removed from their positions to facilitate an internal inquiry into the matter.
Demonstrating their dissatisfaction, the inmates began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding the reinstatement of their previous roles. FCS reported that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with medical personnel evaluating the health of the inmates involved.
FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma confirmed that a commission team is looking into the situation, and the FHRADC has stated that the inmates are receiving necessary medical support. The commission will continue to monitor the ongoing situation.
