The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) is conducting an investigation into the case of two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction Facility. This investigation was confirmed following a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) which addressed the reasons for their protest.
The inmates initiated their hunger strike in response to a disagreement over the management of food supplies. Both inmates were assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen but were temporarily reassigned pending an internal investigation. In protest of this decision, they began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous positions.
FCS later issued another statement indicating that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with medical personnel evaluating the health of the inmates involved. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma reported that a team from the Commission is looking into the situation. Additionally, FHRADC confirmed that the inmates are currently receiving medical assistance and will continue to be monitored.
