The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has initiated an investigation into two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. The inquiry comes after the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) issued a statement on Saturday detailing the circumstances surrounding the protest.
The inmates, who were assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen, began the hunger strike last Friday due to a disagreement over food supply management after their temporary removal from their positions for an internal investigation. They demanded the reinstatement of their previous roles.
FCS announced that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, and their medical team evaluated the health of the protesting inmates. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma reported that a team from the Commission is looking into the case. The FHRADC also confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical attention and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
