Inmates Hunger Strike Sparks Human Rights Investigation in Fiji

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating the case of two inmates who recently staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction Facility. This investigation follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS), which outlined the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.

The hunger strike was initiated by the inmates due to a disagreement regarding the management of food supplies. They had previously been assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen but were temporarily removed from their positions to facilitate an internal investigation.

In response to their grievances, the two inmates began their hunger strike last Friday, calling for the reinstatement of their previous roles. FCS confirmed that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with their medical team evaluating the health status of the strikers.

FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma indicated that a team from the Commission is looking into the issue. The FHRADC has also confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
