Inmates’ Hunger Strike Sparks Controversy in Fiji’s Correctional System

The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed that two inmates at one of its facilities have begun a hunger strike, which commenced last Friday.

According to FCS, the inmates had previously worked in the facility’s kitchen. An internal investigation was initiated after a dispute arose concerning the management of food supplies, which led to their temporary removal from kitchen duties.

The inmates have expressed their discontent with this decision and are demanding to be reinstated to their former positions. Despite ongoing counseling efforts from senior officers, healthcare professionals, and support staff, the hunger strike is continuing.

The FCS is working to involve spiritual leaders from their respective faiths to offer further support and guidance.

The organization has reassured the public that the health and well-being of the inmates remain their primary concern. Medical staff are closely monitoring the individuals, and all necessary measures are in place to protect their health during the hunger strike.

Both the Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation regarding the hunger strike.

The Fiji Corrections Service remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all inmates while addressing their grievances through suitable internal channels.
