Inmates’ Hunger Strike Sparks Controversy in Fiji Prisons

Two inmates at a Fiji Corrections Service facility have begun a hunger strike, which started on September 20, 2024. The Fiji Corrections Service confirmed this development in a statement, explaining that the inmates had previously worked in the facility’s kitchen. Following a dispute over food supply management, an internal investigation was conducted, leading to their temporary removal from kitchen duties.

The inmates are protesting this decision and are demanding to be reinstated to their former positions. Despite numerous counseling sessions conducted by senior officers, healthcare professionals, and support staff, the hunger strike persists.

Additionally, efforts are being made to involve spiritual leaders from their respective faiths for further support and guidance. The Fiji Corrections Service emphasizes that ensuring the health and well-being of the inmates is a top priority.

“The individuals are under close medical supervision, and all necessary precautions are in place to protect their health during this time,” the statement said. The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation regarding the hunger strike.

The Fiji Corrections Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all inmates while effectively addressing their grievances through established internal processes. “We are actively working to resolve the issue and will provide updates as needed,” the statement concluded.
