The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is actively monitoring two inmates who have begun a hunger strike since Friday. In a statement issued yesterday, the FCS indicated that they are working to involve spiritual leaders from various denominations to provide support and guidance to the inmates.

The statement revealed that the inmates previously worked in the facility’s kitchen. Following a dispute concerning the management of food supplies, an internal investigation was conducted, leading to their temporary removal from kitchen responsibilities. The inmates have expressed their dissatisfaction with this decision and are demanding to be reinstated, despite multiple counseling sessions with senior officials, healthcare staff, and other support personnel. They have continued their hunger strike as a form of protest.

The FCS emphasized that the health and wellbeing of the inmates are a primary concern, with medical staff closely monitoring their condition and taking all necessary precautions. The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation regarding the hunger strike.

FCS Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa mentioned that the inmates had notified their families of their intention to commence the hunger strike. He stated that by the time he was informed, the news had already circulated on social media due to the families’ comments.

Commissioner Nakarawa noted that hunger strikes are common occurrences within correctional facilities. He added that the inmates have expanded their demands during the strike, expressing wishes to meet with him and the Attorney-General among others. He advised officers to focus on the inmates’ care and emphasized that any discussions about their demands would only occur after they resume eating, stressing that decisions cannot be made under pressure. The current recorded grievances relate specifically to their removal from kitchen duties.
