Indo-Fijian-managed schools continue to provide educational opportunities despite a decrease in the Indo-Fijian population, stated Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad. He made these remarks during the Shree Krishna Leela event at Nanuku Sangam School in Rakiraki on Saturday evening.
“All schools established by the Girmitya community were designed not just for their descendants but for children of all ethnicities in the country,” Prof Prasad said. He emphasized that these Indian-run schools remain open to students from all backgrounds, including iTaukei children, despite the community’s declining numbers.
Prof Prasad also highlighted the urgent need for upgrades in rural schools and expressed gratitude to the Nanuku community for organizing the Krishna Leela to raise funds for the school’s rehabilitation. “I have heard the request for government funding to support programs that not only promote religious learnings but also generate financial support, and I will take it into consideration,” he added.
By the end of the event on Saturday night, organizers had successfully raised over $10,000 during the week-long program.
