Adi Tulia Nacola, a rising star among young iTaukei women entrepreneurs, continues to make her mark in diverse fields. Known for her ventures in furniture and boat building, Nacola has now successfully entered the realm of film production with her debut short film, “Bubu Belo.”
The 25-minute film, produced in partnership with Fiji-based Bure Productions, is notable for being written and performed in the iTaukei language. It tells the story of two main characters, Bubu and Tamara, living in a small wooden cottage by the sea. Set against the backdrop of Verevere Village in the Ra province, from which Nacola originates, the narrative explores themes of survival and respect for the land as Bubu teaches Tamara to fish and cultivate his own food.
Conflict arises with the arrival of an unexpected visitor from their past, forcing Bubu to make a tough choice between reliance on traditional land practices and the allure of urban opportunities. Nacola’s film not only highlights the struggles faced by indigenous people tied to their land but also emphasizes the importance of cultural identity.
In her own words, Nacola expressed the need to recognize opportunities both in the urban settings of the world and within village life. She acts as a strong advocate for storytelling, viewing it as a crucial means to connect generations and preserve traditional knowledge within families. “Bubu Belo” aims to bridge the gap between elders and the youth, fostering appreciation for their heritage.
The premiere of “Bubu Belo” is scheduled to be hosted by Film Fiji at their Suva office, with plans for subsequent screenings across various villages and communities in Ra. This initiative, sponsored by Film Fiji, is designed to enhance community awareness regarding the significance of cultural roots and identity.
