India’s President Pledges Support for Fiji’s Climate Justice and Development

President Droupadi Murmu emphasized India’s commitment to climate justice for Fiji and other ocean states during her significant visit earlier this week. Speaking to the Fijian Parliament, she reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for climate justice, stating, “As a powerful voice of the Global South, India will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Fiji and other ocean states for climate justice.”

She acknowledged Fiji’s vital contributions to addressing global climate change and promoting sustainable development. President Murmu also highlighted India’s commitment to fostering a development partnership with Fiji.

A key outcome of the trip was the official allocation of a site for a 100-bedded Super Specialty Hospital in Suva, which will be established with the help of the Indian government. This project was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 3rd FIPIC Summit earlier in 2023. “We are confident that this critical infrastructure for public good will transform the delivery of quality and affordable healthcare, benefiting not just Fiji but the entire Pacific region,” she stated.

Additionally, land was allocated by the Fijian government for the construction of the Indian High Commission premises and an Indian Cultural Centre in Suva, as noted by Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar during a media briefing. “As India emerges strongly on the global stage, we stand ready to partner with Fiji according to your priorities to build a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous nation,” he remarked.

In a reflective moment, President Murmu recalled Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014, where he underscored the core values that unite both nations and confirmed India’s support for Fiji’s development aspirations.

During her historic visit, which marked the first time an Indian head of state has visited Fiji, President Murmu was awarded Fiji’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ by President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere. This award ceremony took place at the State House, signifying the strong bonds between India and Fiji. President Murmu expressed her gratitude for this honor, highlighting it as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the two nations.

She also engaged with the Indian community in Fiji, sharing her admiration for the resilience of the ‘Girmitiya’ indentured laborers who arrived in Fiji 145 years ago. She recognized the Indian diaspora as critical partners in India’s development journey. “We see our overseas Indian community across the world as important partners and stakeholders in building the India of our dreams,” she emphasized.

Furthermore, President Murmu visited the National War Memorial in Suva to pay respects to fallen soldiers and laid floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School. Her three-nation tour, which includes New Zealand and Timor-Leste, reinforces India’s dedication to strengthening relationships with Pacific Island nations.
