Increased Allowance for Village Headmen Under New Budget

Allowances for turaganikoro (village headmen) have been increased by $50.

During the 2024-2025 National Budget debate in Parliament this week, Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Heritage and Arts Ifereimi Vasu confirmed this while responding to Independent MP in Opposition Jone Usamate, stating that this increase comes with additional responsibilities for the turaganikoro.

“The increase is because we are going to give the turaganikoro more responsibilities with the economic empowerment of the iTaukei,” Mr. Vasu said.

“There will be more reporting required from the turaganikoro, which is why we decided to increase the allowance.”

He stated that the current allowance was insufficient.

“It’s really not enough considering the cost of living.

“We have increased it by $50, from $150 to $200.

“And realistically, on the ground, it’s still not enough.”

Mr. Vasu mentioned that the delay in payment was due to waiting for reports from the turaganikoro.

“In regard to the payment for the turaganikoro, we are trying to get the report from them.

“That’s the cause of the delay.

“Because the turaganikoro are nominated by the community, we ensure they perform the duties assigned to them before paying them since it involves public funds.”
