Immunisation Crisis in the Pacific: Children at Risk

Dr. Mark Jacobs, the World Health Organization’s representative to the South Pacific, highlighted concerning trends in immunization coverage during the 13th Pacific Immunization Managers Meeting held in Sigatoka. He emphasized that many Pacific Island Countries (PICs) are failing to achieve adequate vaccination rates, thus putting the health and lives of children at significant risk.

Dr. Jacobs pointed out that the surveillance systems for vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) have weakened, citing that the specific sensitivity indicator for polio surveillance was not met in the region in 2022. He also reminded attendees of the serious measles outbreaks that affected five PICs in 2019, illustrating how easily hard-won public health achievements can be reversed.

However, he expressed optimism regarding ongoing efforts, noting that some PICs have been proactive in addressing immunity gaps through catch-up vaccination programs and supplementary immunization activities. Additionally, capacity-building workshops aimed at enhancing vaccination and surveillance standards have been organized in several countries.

The meeting’s primary focus will be on strengthening health systems, with an emphasis on eliminating measles and rubella. Dr. Jacobs expressed hopes that these discussions would lead to revitalized efforts in the region’s immunization programs, ultimately paving the way for the successful elimination of these diseases.

This information serves as a critical call to action for all stakeholders in the region to collaborate and strengthen vaccine access and disease monitoring, ensuring a healthier future for Pacific children.

In summary, while the current state of immunization in the Pacific is a challenge, there are proactive measures being taken that hold promise for improving health outcomes and safeguarding future generations.
