Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the importance of celebrating Deepavali, or Diwali, as an opportunity to revitalize the principles of truth, justice, and righteousness, which are essential for Fiji’s future progress. In his Diwali message, Prasad, who also leads the National Federation Party, reminded citizens not to take their freedoms and rights for granted, which were restored following the election of the Coalition Government in December 2022.
He drew parallels between the festival’s values and the role of the Coalition Government, stating that these rights will be upheld as they were by Lord Ram in Ayodhya after overcoming adversity. Prasad highlighted that the essence of Diwali should resonate in everyday life, as the historical narrative of Lord Ram’s 14-year exile and subsequent return symbolizes the establishment of a just and accountable government dedicated to the welfare of all citizens.
Acknowledging challenges faced by the Coalition Government in readjusting the nation’s moral framework after years of dictatorship, he noted that, like Lord Ram, they strive to overcome obstacles on the path to peace and prosperity. The lights of diya, representing hope and guidance, serve as a reminder of the ideals that should lead the nation forward.
Prasad reiterated that the Coalition Government’s priority is meaningful solutions that prioritize the welfare of the people, reflecting the virtues exemplified by Lord Ram, who focused on the greater good rather than personal interest. He concluded by affirming the government’s commitment to collaborative dialogue aimed at achieving consensus and sustainable progress.
This message reinforces a hopeful narrative for Fiji’s future, reminding citizens that through mutual respect and understanding, lasting positive change can be achieved. The celebration of Diwali serves as a reminder of the power of light over darkness and the importance of enshrining principles of integrity and accountability in governance.
