Opposition MP Jone Usamate has strongly criticized former Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, accusing him of hypocrisy and self-interest. Usamate spoke to FijiLive, highlighting Sayed-Khaiyum’s past opposition to the $15,000 constituency allowance for MPs, a position FijiFirst had supported in Parliament.
Usamate pointed out that despite denouncing this allowance, Sayed-Khaiyum later accepted it on behalf of FijiFirst and allocated $5,000 per member to cover party debts stemming from poor financial management. He questioned Sayed-Khaiyum’s commitment to his stated principles, suggesting he should have donated the funds instead of using them to remedy his own financial mismanagement.
He further criticized Sayed-Khaiyum for leaving FijiFirst with a staggering debt of nearly $700,000 and subsequently dissolving the party, which left creditors unpaid. Usamate emphasized that Sayed-Khaiyum’s actions contradict his call for ethical behavior from others, particularly criticizing MPs who followed their party directives.
Highlighting the responsibilities of MPs in their communities, Usamate noted the challenges they face on modest salaries of $50,000, especially when contrasted with Sayed-Khaiyum’s significant annual salary of $235,000—nearly six times that of other government MPs and Opposition backbenchers. He argued that this disparity underscores Sayed-Khaiyum’s leadership style, which he claims prioritizes personal enrichment over fairness.
Usamate urged Sayed-Khaiyum to donate the $400,000 he earned from his inflated salary to settle FijiFirst’s debts, challenging his beliefs in transparency and morality. He concluded by asserting that Sayed-Khaiyum’s record of hypocrisy should not be overlooked and called for him to reflect on his actions before criticizing others on ethical matters.
This tough dialogue highlights the ongoing debate over governmental ethics and accountability in Fiji, and it underscores the vital role that political figures play in setting standards. It’s essential for citizens to engage with these discussions, ensuring they hold their leaders accountable while fostering a political environment that prioritizes integrity and service over self-interest.
