Jasnita Ali, a 32-year-old backyard gardener, is set to expand her hydroponic farm to a commercial level after receiving a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) last week. The funding was awarded to Ms. Ali through the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program at the Hilton Fiji Resort on Denarau on Wednesday.

Ms. Ali plans to use the grant to enhance her business by acquiring more materials and expanding her farm’s infrastructure. She aims to provide fresh, organic, and pesticide-free vegetables at lower prices for consumers.

Her business, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), operates as a small-scale hydroponics farm in Chinakoti, Ba, which she started in September 2022 in her backyard. Ms. Ali became interested in hydroponic farming due to the high incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country, emphasizing the importance of healthy eating for improved lifestyles.

NFFS employs innovative techniques such as the Dutch Bucket System and the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) for cultivating crops on a quarter-acre of land. The farm utilizes advanced technology, including an automated dosing system from Bluelab, to manage its hydroponic operations.

By growing a variety of crops throughout the year, the farm ensures a steady supply of fresh, chemical-free vegetables. Moreover, Ms. Ali is committed to inclusivity, hiring individuals from marginalized groups, including those with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth.

Reflecting on her experience as a traditional farmer, Ms. Ali noted the challenges posed by flooding and drought, which hinder crop production. However, she has found that hydroponic farming allows her to cultivate a diverse range of vegetables without being affected by changing weather conditions.

The GIST program offers intensive training to empower young science and technology innovators and entrepreneurs, providing hands-on experience and mentorship from leading U.S. experts in collaboration with local partners.
