Hunger Strike Sparks Investigation at Fiji’s Naboro Prison

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating the case of two inmates who engaged in a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. The investigation comes after the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) provided an explanation regarding the reason behind the inmates’ protest.

The protest was triggered by a disagreement over food supply management. The inmates, who had been assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen, were temporarily reassigned as part of an internal investigation.

In response to their dissatisfaction with their situation, the inmates began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their former positions. An update from FCS confirmed that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, and the inmates were evaluated by the medical team to assess their health conditions.

FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a dedicated team from the Commission is looking into the issue. The FHRADC has also confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
