Hunger Strike Sparks Investigation at Fiji’s Naboro Maximum Correction Facility

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has initiated an investigation into two inmates who recently staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This inquiry follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) addressing the reasons behind the protest.

The inmates, who had been assigned to the facility’s kitchen, began their hunger strike last Friday in response to a dispute regarding food supply management. They demanded to be reinstated to their previous positions after being temporarily removed to facilitate an internal investigation.

FCS announced that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, after which their medical team evaluated the health of the inmates involved. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma confirmed that a team is actively looking into the situation. The Commission also stated that the inmates are receiving medical support and that they will continue to monitor the circumstances.
