The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating the case of two inmates who recently staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction Facility. The investigation was initiated following a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) explaining the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.
The hunger strike was sparked by a disagreement over food supply management at the facility, where both inmates were employed in the kitchen. They were temporarily reassigned as an internal investigation was conducted into the matter. In protest, the inmates began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous positions.
FCS released a follow-up statement confirming that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with medical staff assessing the health of the inmates. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is currently looking into the situation. The FHRADC also confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and will continue to monitor their condition.
