The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has confirmed it is investigating the case of two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correctional Facility. This confirmation came after the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) issued a statement on Saturday outlining the reasons behind the protest.
The two inmates, who worked in the facility’s kitchen, initiated their hunger strike last Friday in response to a disagreement over food supply management. They were temporarily removed from their kitchen duties to facilitate an internal investigation into the issue.
On Monday evening, FCS announced that the hunger strike had ended, with their medical team assessing the health of the protesting inmates. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma indicated that a team from the Commission was looking into the situation. Furthermore, FHRADC confirmed that the inmates were receiving medical assistance and that they would continue to monitor developments closely.
