Hunger Strike Sparks Human Rights Investigation in Fiji’s Naboro Prison

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced an investigation into the case of two inmates who recently conducted a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This confirmation followed a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) on Saturday, which detailed the reasons behind the strike.

The protest stemmed from a disagreement regarding the management of food supplies. The inmates in question were assigned to the kitchen at the facility. They were temporarily reassigned from their positions to allow for an internal investigation.

In response to their dissatisfaction, the two inmates initiated a hunger strike last Friday, demanding the reinstatement of their previous roles. FCS issued another statement on Monday, noting that the hunger strike concluded that evening, with medical staff evaluating the health of the inmates involved.

FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is currently looking into the issue. The FHRADC also confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical support and will continue to monitor the situation.
