“Human Rights Activist Calls for Presidential Vote in Fiji Amid Controversy”

A prominent human rights activist has emphasized the need for Fijians to vote for their President. Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC), expressed her dissatisfaction with Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s nomination for presidency by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

“There are more capable individuals available,” she stated. Human rights advocates have previously criticized Ratu Naiqama for his remarks regarding Opposition member Aliki Bia, who raised issues about the treatment of the Melanesian community.

Ali asserted that anyone in the presidential role should possess a solid educational background and a proven commitment to human rights. “I don’t see that in the person who has been nominated,” she remarked, adding that the nomination would not foster national unity.

She described the nomination as a move that reinforces hierarchical structures, patriarchy, and significant inequality, suggesting it was a position for “the boys and wrongdoers.” Ali referenced past incidents involving Ratu Naiqama, such as his suspension from Parliament in 2015 and his remarks directed toward Bia, advocating that these factors should be weighed.

“I believe we need to elect our President rather than have appointments made arbitrarily. Our leaders must reflect on the current state of our democracy,” Ali said. “Fiji, are we progressing in modern democracy, or are we moving backwards? We should aim for a harmonious blend of traditional culture and modern democracy for our survival.”

Prime Minister Rabuka recently announced that Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has officially withdrawn his name from consideration for another term as President and commended his efforts while in office. He also confirmed Ratu Naiqama as his nominee following discussions with the Parliamentary Caucus of The People’s Alliance.
