The Public Rental Board (PRB) has put forward a financial proposal aimed at the development of the Lagilagi Estate in Raiwaqa, focusing on the construction of over 800 flats. Timoci Naleba, the General Manager of PRB, emphasized that the extent of this ambitious project is contingent on the government’s support for the necessary funding. He pointed out that there is a substantial annual demand for housing in the region, with about 1,600 units required to meet the needs of families.
Naleba mentioned that the current housing deficit around Raiwaqa is significant, with a gap exceeding 10,000 units. The PRB aims to address this concern in the upcoming 2025-2026 National Budget, highlighting the urgency of providing adequate housing, especially for low-income earners from informal settlements like Wailea and Jittu, as well as residents of the Nabua Muslim League, who were notified of their evacuation last year.
This proposal reflects a continuity of PRB’s previous efforts in housing development, such as ongoing projects at the Lagilagi Housing Estate, which recently saw the completion of 36 housing units that are set to accommodate various families in need. The government has previously allocated funds towards expanding housing in Jittu Estate, with similar projects showcasing a proactive approach to tackle the growing housing crisis.
The recent developments signify hope for many families currently facing uncertain living conditions, and reinforce the government’s commitment to enhancing community stability through affordable housing initiatives. As plans move forward, residents are optimistic that concrete steps will soon transform these proposals into reality.
Additionally, this commitment signals an ongoing effort to tackle housing shortages while reinforcing the importance of support for low-income earners within this community. The collaboration of various governmental departments further emphasizes a collective effort to ensure that those in need are prioritized in future housing solutions.
