The Public Rental Board (PRB) has proposed a financial investment aimed at developing the Lagilagi Estate in Raiwaqa, which will involve the construction of over 800 flats. Timoci Naleba, PRB’s General Manager, noted that the success of this ambitious project relies heavily on government support for funding. He highlighted a significant annual demand for housing, estimating the need for approximately 1,600 units to accommodate families in the region.
Currently, Raiwaqa is facing a considerable housing deficit, with more than 10,000 units needed to fulfill the demand. As the PRB prepares for the upcoming 2025-2026 National Budget, addressing this housing crisis has become increasingly urgent, particularly for low-income families living in informal settlements, such as Wailea and Jittu, alongside residents of the Nabua Muslim League who were notified of their evacuation last year.
This proposal builds on the PRB’s earlier housing initiatives, such as the recent completion of 36 housing units at the Lagilagi Housing Estate, designed to serve families in need. The government has actively contributed funding towards similar housing projects in Jittu Estate, reinforcing a proactive approach to alleviate the growing housing concern.
The recent developments offer hope for many families navigating insecure living conditions, exemplifying the government’s dedication to bolstering community stability through affordable housing options. As plans progress, residents remain optimistic that these ideas will soon materialize into concrete actions.
Moreover, this commitment underscores an ongoing effort to address housing shortages and the importance of supporting low-income individuals in the community. The collaboration among various governmental departments further highlights a united approach to ensure vulnerable populations are prioritized in forthcoming housing solutions.
