The Colonial Memorial Hospital (CWMH) has emphasized its commitment to managing projects methodically while prioritizing patient safety. Medical superintendent Dr. Luke Nasedra addressed recent claims from the International Women’s Association (IWA Fiji) regarding the hospital’s rejection of renovation assistance, particularly concerning the vital replacement of the Children’s Ward lift.
Dr. Nasedra clarified that the hospital had not declined IWA’s assistance offer. Instead, he explained that the lift replacement is already funded through the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS) budget and is progressing through the government’s tender process, with a contract having been allocated to a designated company.
“We made it clear to IWA that they might explore other projects for their contributions,” stated Dr. Nasedra. He underscored the importance of adhering to governmental processes, which ensure the highest standards of safety and quality in healthcare delivery.
Despite Dr. Nasedra’s reassurances, IWA Fiji president Judy Compain expressed her frustration regarding the ongoing issues of the Children’s Ward lift, which has faced disrepair for several years. Reflecting on previous discussions with former Health Minister Dr. James Fong, Compain noted that no advancements have been realized.
In November 2023, CWM Hospital supplied IWA with hospital plans, enabling them to seek quotations for lift replacements. However, in February 2024, IWA learned from the Ministry of Health that a tender process was underway for several lifts, including one specifically for the Children’s Ward.
“We merely want a hospital that effectively serves the community’s needs,” Compain emphasized, highlighting the impact on healthcare workers, patients, and their families.
This situation underscores the significance of collaborative efforts to enhance healthcare facilities. It is hopeful that with ongoing dialogue between the hospital administration and organizations like IWA, solutions will be found that meet the urgent needs of the community.
In summary, the article outlines the collaborative dynamics between CWMH and IWA regarding hospital renovations, highlighting both parties’ commitment to enhancing healthcare facilities, while navigating governmental processes to secure necessary upgrades.
