Thirty patients at the Pacific Eye Institute experienced a joyful moment yesterday as the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team from China removed their surgical dressings.

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, highlighted the significant contributions of the Bright Journey team, stating that their efforts have not only transformed the lives of these patients but have also benefited a total of 100 individuals across the Pacific region. “To date, they have successfully performed 100 cataract surgeries in the Pacific,” noted Mr. Zhou.

He emphasized the life-changing impact of these surgeries, allowing Fijians to regain their vision and return to a high quality of life. He added that the medical team’s work brings hope to families, particularly since many of the patients had been the primary earners who struggled to support their families due to their vision issues.

Reflecting on their past achievements, Mr. Zhou mentioned that last year the team performed 60 cataract surgeries, and they have plans to carry out another 60 this year. So far, they have completed 30 surgeries, with an additional 30 scheduled in the coming days. “I’m glad for the patients because when I remove the cover from their eyes, you can see the light in their eyes,” he expressed.

This initiative not only restores vision but also reinforces the sense of community and support within the Pacific region. The ongoing efforts of the medical team provide a beacon of hope, showcasing the power of international collaboration in healthcare and the profound impact it can have on individuals and families.

This endeavor serves as a reminder of the potential for positive change through humanitarian efforts and medical assistance, offering a brighter future for those impacted by vision impairments.
